STAT 2025 Book Study

Using Modified Trade Books to Deepen Student Understanding of the Nature of Science and Increase Cultural Awareness

Join STAT for a three-part professional learning experience for grades K–5 science educators designed to deepen your students’ understanding of the Nature of Science (NOS) while strengthening cultural awareness in the classroom.

  • Session 1: Explore the Nature of Science (NOS) through the lens of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and dive into an NSTA article highlighting the importance of cultural relevance in science teaching.

  • Session 2: Learn how purposeful modifications to trade books—like The Clues Are in the Poo: The Story of Dinosaur Scientist Karen Chin by Jane Kurtz and Karen Chin—paired with reflection and discussion can help students connect with and internalize NOS concepts.

  • Session 3: Put your learning into action. Select a trade book of your choice and collaborate with peers to adapt it toward a specific NOS theme and/or cultural awareness goal.
